General Considerations

  • Fractures usually have irregular edges and lack a cortex, at least on one side
    • They can occur anywhere in a bone, and are not bilaterally symmetrical
  • Sesamoids are smooth-edged and well-corticated
    • They are common in the hands and feet and are usually symmetrical
